Niacinamide For Skin – What does Niacinamide Do?
Niacinamide For Skin – Dermatologists have been advocating the use of Niacinamide as one of the few recognised important elements for general skin health.
This well-known, tried-and-true component is increasingly appearing in formulas ranging from creams to serums. As a dermatology-inspired brand, we believe in the importance of this component in skincare.
So I will go over everything from what this skincare ingredient is to what it can do to improve your skin—and why dermatologists at Rodan and Fields skincare are excited about it.
Niacinamide is a vitamin B3 compound derived from vitamin B3 (niacin). A beta-hydroxy beta-carotene derivative with the chemical structure C6H6N3O4.
It Does Derive from niacin, the active form of vitamin B3; Niacinamide is a group of compounds called retinoids. A single chemical is actually combined with four different amino acids to create the compound. Retinoids can help reduce redness and inflammation.
The active form of vitamin B3, Niacinamide, is used in skincare formulations for hyperpigmentation, anti-ageing and acne treatments.
Despite its name, Niacinamide is not the same as niacin. Instead, they’re two sorts of B-3.
However, Niacinamide can be made from niacin tablets. This occurs when the body has too much niacin. The body can also make Niacinamide from tryptophan. Always be with your doctor before taking B-3 or other supplements.
Dietary sources of vitamin B3 include fish and eggs. But these dietary elements have little effect on skin health. So instead, use Niacinamide topically to ensure it targets your skin conditions. Skincare rescue.
Rodan and Fields Dr Sumita Butani, SVP, Innovation – Dr Butani advises an anti-inflammatory diet. “All those sugars we love are bad.” Dr Butani recommends a low-carbohydrate, low-sugar diet to age healthily.
Helping fight ageing and inflammation. “It makes sense to make a major effort with food and exercise,” Dr Sumita says.
“Too much activity can cause inflammation and breakdown, yet good exercise strengthens mitochondria.” Stronger mitochondria optimise enzymatic reactions within the cell.
The antioxidant properties of niacinamide help protect the skin from environmental damage.
Among the skin benefits of using Niacinamide are:
Not all active ingredient percentages are created equal. For example, Niacinamide is effective at 2% doses. Topical niacinamide studies utilise 2-10%. (not orally ingested tablets). Some formulations contain 20% niacinamide, which is excellent for more advanced signs of damage. If you’re sensitive, start low. 2% is advised.
It should say the percentage on the label or ingredients list. This indicates its potency and, if you have sensitive skin, its potential irritation. Begin with a 2%-5% serum.
While Niacinamide is a multitasker in itself, it never hurts to have extra benefits. In a single step, I like a product that has multiple active ingredients in high concentrations. This simplifies my routine. Always look for good ingredients.
Even if a serum works, I won’t use it if it’s unpleasant to use. I like cheap niacinamide serums, although they don’t always have a nice recipe. I prefer a product that absorbs and dries quickly so I can move on.
The most commonly reported side effect is dryness or irritation at the site of application.
Also, depending on how long you’ve been using the product and how intensely you apply it, skin reactions may be visible in weeks, months, or even years.
According to Dr Butani SVP at Rodan and Fields, neither is superior to the other. Rodan and Fields Multi-Med Therapy approach to men’s and womens’ skin issues is the right answer. However, Dr Butani also says you can’t rely on one molecule to be the miracle that saves you from a condition.
So, it is the best molecule in an active formula that really goes to its target, which causes change. If you have Vitamin C but has been neutralised (the formula has become brown, oxidised, dead, and no longer active), it will not perform efficiently.
Same thing if you have Vitamin C in a recipe with an incorrect pH. There is no longer an active molecule.
“When we get into the hard science, when we say Multi-Med Therapy, it’s optimising each molecule with the optimum pH with the correct formulations that are truly active in doing the heavy lifting,” Dr Butani explains.
“And, once again, we do not believe it is only Vitamin C or that Vitamin C is superior to Niacinamide because why not have both when they can both provide benefits?”
It increases keratin and ceramide levels in the skin. This improves skin moisture retention, keeping dry skin healthy, firm, and hydrated. This is vital for mature skin.
Niacinamide, found in moistened skin, regulates sebaceous gland oil production. So it reduces skin moisture loss and gland overheating.
Resulting in your skins ability to regenerate cells, defend itself from harmful UV rays, and naturally reverse sun-induced skin damage like wrinkles and fine lines.
The ‘maverick’ component is antimicrobial and reduces skin inflammation and redness. It treats skin irritation, acne, blotchiness, eczema, and other inflammatory skin conditions. When applied regularly, it promotes collagen formation, cures hyperpigmentation, and naturally minimises skin pores.
Niacinamide has been proven to decrease transepidermal water loss by improving stratum corneum barrier function. Furthermore, Niacinamide stimulates the skin’s natural lipid production, particularly ceramides.

The antibacterial characteristics of niacinamide help treat inflammatory acne caused by propionibacterium acnes (p.acnes) in clogged pores.
Niacinamide is a gentle exfoliant and sebum reducer. For non-inflammatory acne like blackheads and whiteheads, it can help reduce excess oil production and improve the skin’s capacity to shed dead cells.
Hormones, stress, or specific dietary habits may cause acne. However, it may help reduce the appearance of breakouts and reduce redness and swelling.

The optimal amount of Niacinamide is twice a day for anti-ageing. This is important because Niacinamide breaks down quickly, leaving behind the remaining niacin and choline.
You should always apply sunscreen, moisturiser, and any other ingredients to your skin before using Niacinamide on it. Long-term use of Niacinamide is safe and has few side effects, but there are some signs and symptoms of long-term use.
How long does it take for niacinamide-containing products to work?
Dr Butani emphasises the significance of formulation above a single substance.
The key here, like with any skincare routine, is consistency. Using the entire REDEFINE Regimen, you should anticipate noticing the first visible benefits after 4 weeks, followed by a greater impact after 8 weeks.
The clinical trials of the REDEFINE Regimen speak for themselves (please keep in mind that these results are from participants using the entire Regimen, as recommended).
Bottom line: Niacinamide is a tried-and-true substance that plays a significant role in skincare. Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) is contained in REDEFINE Pore Refining Toner, for example, and acts to dramatically evening out the appearance of skin tone for a youthful glow.
Using this toner in conjunction with the other steps of the Regimen assists in addressing all major indications of ageing. However, as you are aware, there are no “wonder” ingredients or products. Consistency is the key to your skincare routine, using the right ingredients in the right order.
